The brainchild of architects Shriya Parasrampuria and Prashant Dupare from Blurring Boundaries, this stunning residence is bordered by five towering mango trees that inspire both its design and livability. For Ajay Gharat, an Ayurvedic doctor with a profound respect for nature, building a home that resonates with the environment was not just a goal—it was a necessity.
Designing with Nature in Mind
The land, nestled in Pen, Raigad, demanded careful consideration. Prashant explains, “We were determined to design a structure that flowed with the land, encompassing the existing mango trees without disruption.” This philosophy manifested beautifully in an open floor plan, allowing spaces to connect while maximizing natural light and airflow. The home's design not only preserves the lush greenery but integrates it deeply into the living experience, ensuring Ajay's family enjoys the serenity and beauty of their surroundings.
Innovative Use of Sustainable Materials
Reflecting Ajay’s desire for an eco-friendly dwelling, the architects minimized the use of cement and constructed the house with locally sourced bricks, upcycled tiles, and even repurposed glass bottles for striking decorative walls. “Our approach was to leave a minimal carbon footprint while enhancing the natural aesthetics of the home,” shares Shriya, emphasizing the importance of sustainability throughout the construction process.
Creating Cool Comfort Naturally
This sustainable design translates into comfort, with the interior temperature being a few degrees cooler than the outside. “It’s quite remarkable,” Ajay notes. “Even during the hot summers, the clever layout ensures a pleasant atmosphere inside.” The uniquely designed roof maximizes shade from the trees, eliminating the need for air conditioning and harnessing nature’s own cooling system.
