Great Western Air Ambulance Charity Sets New Record
The Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) has announced a remarkable achievement, responding to a record number of incidents for the second consecutive year. In 2025, GWAAC's specially trained crew rushed to assist 2,344 individuals in urgent need of medical care across the regions of Gloucestershire, Bristol, Bath, and others. This averages to six more call-outs per month compared to 2024, highlighting the increased demand for critical care services.
Understanding the Rise in Medical Incidents
In 2025, a significant 56% of GWAAC's call-outs were medical-related incidents, a slight uptick from the prior year. Operations Officer Tim Ross-Smith attributes this increase to the charity’s educational outreach efforts with road paramedics, enhancing their ability to respond effectively to emergencies. This collaborative approach has led to a greater awareness and utilization of GWAAC's life-saving services.
Cardiac Arrests: A Major Concern
Heart health emerged as a critical issue, with 521 people suffering cardiac arrests— the leading reason for call-outs. One inspiring story is that of Pam, a 66-year-old survivor who credits her chance at life to the quick actions of emergency responders and GWAAC’s team. Pam encourages others to learn CPR, highlighting community involvement as essential for saving lives.
A Community Effort in Difficult Times
Despite the challenges posed by rising operational costs and a difficult fundraising environment, CEO Anna Perry remains optimistic. She expresses heartfelt gratitude for community support, indicating that GWAAC’s lifesaving service relies heavily on donations. Continuing this support is vital as operational demands increase, as highlighted by the charity's unprecedented response numbers.
How You Can Make a Difference
Every contribution helps ensure that GWAAC can continue to provide critical support when it’s needed most. Community members are invited to donate to sustain this essential service. Remember, you can be a part of the change in your community, making it a safer place for everyone.
