Over a meticulous 12-day study period, drones flew four times daily above the nesting site, documenting turtle behavior and gathering data that previously would have taken a significantly longer time to collect with ground-based observations. With an initial ground count of about 16,000 turtles and a surface count from drones suggesting nearly 79,000, the researchers refined their estimates through statistical models to arrive at the most accurate number yet: 41,000 turtles.
