Celebrating Inclusion and Joy at Francis House
On September 15th, 2025, the Francis House Children’s Hospice in Didsbury welcomed a remarkable guest—Dave Steele, known as The Blind Poet. As an award-winning poet and advocate for individuals with visual impairments, Steele brought warmth to the Family Fun Day, a vibrant two-day event transformed to celebrate families facing life-limiting conditions.
This event, catering specially to children aged 13 and under, was more than just a gathering; it was a music festival filled with laughter, performances, and a message of hope. Among the many highlights, Steele read his new children’s book, "The Unstoppable Duo," which tells the heartfelt story of young Austin, who, like Dave's own son, faces the challenges of gradually losing his sight.
Honoring Memories
Steele's book features another inspiring character, Josh, a wheelchair user, reflecting a narrative that underscores friendship amid adversity. During his appearance, Steele honored his late nephew, Josh, who had received respite care at Francis House. "This book pays tribute to my nephew who made such a significant impact on our lives," he said, emphasizing the importance of the hospice in their family's journey.
A Message of Community
The significance of a supportive community cannot be overstated for families dealing with disabilities. "Having a space where we can connect and share experiences is so crucial," Steele noted. His presence at the event not only provided entertainment but also conveyed a deep sense of belonging for families who often find themselves isolated by their unique challenges.
Creating Magical Memories
Rachel Ellis from the Francis House homecare team highlighted the essence of such events, stating, "We aim to provide safe, accessible space for families inundated with hospital visits. It’s about lifting the weight off their shoulders, even just for a day, so they can create joyful memories together." This perspective underscores the importance of such gatherings, fostering resilience and hope among families in need.
This year’s Family Fun Day will surely be remembered, not just for the fun and festivities but for the sense of community and inspiration it generated—reminding all attendees of the power of family, friendship, and support in the face of challenges.
