Transforming Small Businesses in Cookhouse
The Cookhouse Small Business Initiative is a groundbreaking program that has significantly impacted local entrepreneurs in the Eastern Cape. Funded by ENGIE’s Golden Valley Wind Energy Facility, this year-long initiative has introduced tailored support to strengthen rural economies by equipping ten small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) with essential skills and resources.
Empowerment Through Practical Skills
As Siphosethu Maseti, the Director of Masako Contour, shared, the initiative has transformed not only his business operations but also his personal growth as an entrepreneur. From learning how to effectively track finances to utilizing digital marketing strategies, participants have gained confidence and proficiency in essential business practices. “Before joining, I was not tracking expenses or keeping proper records,” Maseti explained. “The skills I gained helped me become one of just three winners out of 100 small businesses in a pitching competition.”
Building Resilience and Sustainability
The program's emphasis on practical interventions, including financial management and coaching, has enabled entrepreneurs to explore new revenue streams and formalise their operations. Many have ventured into new markets, such as construction and livestock farming, showcasing a collective growth mindset. “Enterprise development is a powerful lever for transformation,” stated Thembakazi Nkawu, Social Performance Coordinator at ENGIE. “These 10 businesses are the start of something much larger for Cookhouse.”
