In a bold move to combat the oppressive heat of Delhi summers, six Class 10 students from The Shri Ram School, led by Amaira Kapoor, transformed discarded kulhads (clay cups) into eco-friendly coolers for local government schools. Their initiative, aptly named Project Vaayu, utilizes traditional Indian cooling techniques combined with modern, sustainable practices. This remarkable project not only cools classrooms by up to 10°C but also does so with minimal environmental impact.
Innovative Approach to Sustainable Learning Environments
Project Vaayu emerged during a scorching heatwave in April 2024, when school conditions became unbearable for students even in air-conditioned classrooms. Concerned about the students in under-resourced schools who had no cooling options, Amaira and her team set out to make a difference. The design is simultaneously practical and innovative. By repurposing kulhads, which are abundantly available in many parts of India, the team leads by example in promoting sustainability.

Through their initiative, the students have already impacted over 400 children across four schools.
