Amid the intensified scrutiny and enforcement actions from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the Trump administration, one Texas teen has taken a brave and proactive step to support families in her community. At just 13 years old, Alexa Jaramillo, an eighth grader at Trinity Basin Preparatory, discovered a vital resource online: small red cards from the Immigrant Legal Resource Center. These cards outline essential constitutional rights for individuals who might encounter ICE officers. Understanding the importance of this information for her mostly Hispanic school, where 83% of students come from immigrant backgrounds, Jaramillo took initiative.
She proposed to her principal the idea of printing the cards on red paper, making them easily recognizable. By personally cutting out and organizing the distribution of 500 cards, her efforts directly addressed the fears many families face regarding immigration enforcement. The response was touching.
