A Transformative Approach to Health: The Food Is Medicine Symposium
Over 100 attendees gathered in person and online for the 3rd Annual Food Is Medicine Symposium, held at the Dorothy Mangurian Women’s Center. This dynamic event emphasized the critical interconnection between nutrition, health, and community resilience. Sponsored by Holy Cross Community Health & Well-Being, the South Florida Hunger Coalition, and the Florida Health & Nutrition Coalition, the symposium has emerged as a pivotal gathering for leaders in food policy and nutrition science to share insights and strategies.
Keynote Insights on Food and Public Health
The symposium kicked off with a welcoming address from Oakland Park Mayor Tim Lonergan. Participants were inspired by keynote speaker Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a prominent cardiologist and Director of the Food is Medicine Institute at Tufts University. His presentation outlined the substantial impact nutrition has on public health, particularly in addressing chronic diseases through improved dietary practices.
Hands-On Learning: Culinary Medicine Masterclass
A standout feature of the symposium was the Culinary Medicine Masterclass, led by Olivia Thomas, RD, from Boston Medical Center. Participants engaged in practical learning about preparing wholesome meals while exploring how to make healthier choices for themselves and their families. This interactive session served not just to inform but to empower attendees on their health journeys.
Challenges and Opportunities in Food Systems
The symposium highlighted more than 30 experts who gathered to discuss systemic changes essential for enhancing food accessibility and equity. Holly Freishtat, Senior Director at the Milken Institute, was among the many voices advocating for innovative solutions to reshape food systems for better health outcomes.
The Importance of Policy and Community Engagement
The event concluded with motivational remarks from Florida Representative Debra Tendrich and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, reinforcing the necessity for continued policy evolution, community collaborations, and innovative approaches to health through nutrition.
Building a Resilient Future through Nutrition
The Food Is Medicine Symposium serves as a powerful reminder that food is more than just sustenance; it's a pathway to health equity, resilience, and improved community well-being. The discussions and insights shared throughout this event are steps toward creating a healthier Florida and beyond, where collective effort in nutritional awareness can lead to sustainable health transformations.
